Summary
Rediscovery of the squeak beetle Hygrobia hermanni (FABRICIUS, 1775) and first record of Helochares lividus
(FORSTER, 1771) in Brandenburg, Germany (Coleoptera: Hygrobiidae, Hydrophilidae)
The squeak beetle Hygrobia hermanni (FABRICIUS, 1775) has been rediscovered after more than 100 years and
Helochares lividus (FORSTER, 1771) is recorded for the first time in Brandenburg, northeastern Germany.
Both species were collected at four sites in three different shallow, exposed, sandy and muddy floodplain pools
along the river Elbe, south and southeast of Lenzen, in north-western Brandenburg.
Both thermophilic species have extended their range in the last two decades coming from the west or south, and
following the river Elbe. The pools near Lenzen housed a rich water beetle fauna, including populations of
Haliplus fulvus (FABRICIUS, 1801), Graptodytes bilineatus (STURM, 1835), Hydaticus continentalis
J. BALFOUR-BROWNE, 1944, Rhantus bistriatus (BERGSTRÄSSER, 1778), R. latitans SHARP, 1882,
Graphoderus austriacus (STURM, 1834) and Hydrophilus piceus (LINNAEUS, 1758).
